The different herb I write about and use in my herb gardens, herbal business and home use are the ones I use the most. There are a few I don’t, but might someday and have included them in this list with their description, use and photo if available.
Agrimony - Agrimonia eupatoria - a perennial which loves a sunny spot and can be grown in a border. The yellow flowers emit an apricot scent used in herbal teas, infusions and herbal remedies.
Amalaki is one of the herbs that make up the triphala, (“three fruits”). The “three fruits” of triphala are founded on T. chebula (haritaki), Phyllanthus emblica (Amalaki, emblic myrobalan, or ambal,), and T. belerica (bibhitaki, bastard myrobalan, or beleric myrobalan). An important rejuvenating, laxative tonic comprised of Myrobalan fruits that are grown in the Indian subcontinent region.
Astragalus - Astragalus membranaceus or milk vetch, Huang QI (Chinese) is an important Chinese herb and is used in many medicinal formulas. An important immune boosting herb and can even be grown in cold climates.
Basil – Ocimum basilicum,
the basil herb with its spicy flavor and aromatic qualities is an
important culinary herb to grow. It has a high market value to sell at
farmer’s markets and local restaurants. |
Borage – Borago officinalis, the leaves taste like cucumbers and can be used in salads, soups, sauces before they get to big. Borage has edible flowers too! Place the purple edible flowers in ice cube trays and freeze for summer time drinks.
Chives – Allium schoenoprasum, chives, which are part of the onion family, are a light, leafy part of a hardy perennial bulb that overwinters really well. I had mine in the same spot for over twelve years. I’ve pulled on it, cut it, divided it in half many times and still it grows.
Dandelion – Taraxacum officinale, (Asteraceae), a potent diuretic, hence the French name, pissenlit, “wet the bed.” An easy plant to establish among any vegetable or herb garden and is thought more as a weed than a medicinal herb plant. |
Dill – Anethum graveolens – This herb plant is an annual, self-seeding herb that grows to about 5 feet high with beautiful yellow tiny flowers. A great herb used for pickles and many other culinary dishes. |

Rosemary – Rosmarinus officinalis, a well-known Mediterranean herb that is native to southern Europe. The rosemary herb is linked with love and romance. These are some beautifully grown herbs that are used in many herb gardens throughout the world. As you can see herbs make good garden plants. They are not only great for cooking, but help other plants in the garden grow better while keeping destructive insects at bay.
